Custom Knifemaker Profile:Victor Harley
A Member of the Cape Knifemaker's Guild
Victor Harley started off as a missionary and an eager student of Theology and ancient languages. A change of vision sent him throughout Southern Africa as an overland field guide on foot and in an old dilapidated SAMIL 20.
He paused the guiding to complete a Diploma in Nature Conservation in Cape Town from where moved on to manage a game farm in Namibia and some more guiding. Moving back to South Africa, Pretoria, he became involved in research on lion, guinea fowl and game counting.
Eventually he completed a Masters degree in Conservation and took up a post as a lecturer in Cape Town teaching Ecology, Resource management and Statistics.
It was whilst he was in Pretoria that he made his first knife under the watchful eye of Andre Thorburn in 2002.
In 2009 he resigned as a lecturer and became a full-time knifemaker and artist. As an artist he works with a large variety of media ranging from pencil to oils, from etchings to charcoal. He is also an accomplished sculptor. His works are in many private collections in South Africa and abroad.
As a knifemaker he prefers to make once-off works with knife steel ranging from 12C27, N690 and Damascus to O1 and D2. He makes both folders (locking liner and friction) and fixed blades using the stock removal method.
Every knife is a work of art and many are embellished with Victors' own scrimshaw.
He is also an environmental consultant, writer and book illustrator.
